HISTORY OF WINCHESTER LITTLE LIBRARIES
During the summer of 2020, a group of committed educators gathered on the front porch of 705 Woodland Avenue to discuss how to promote literacy during the pandemic. Their goal focused on using community space to encourage and spread literacy. How… by building a Little Free Library as the focal point. Thanks to the support of the City of Winchester, these weekly evening porch discussions continued and resulted in the fruition of a community-free library, a bench, and a tree designed and placed at the median of Woodland and Frederick Avenues. This became an Eagle Scout Project for Boy Scout Jaxon Neese under the supervision of Troop # 1 Leader Mike Neese, Librarians Aimee Gangai, Athena Michael, Jennifer Sutter, and WPS Teacher, Emily Rose DeAngleis. The first Winchester Little Library was inaugurated and dedicated by Mayor David Smith on Labor Day, September 5, 2020.
To further advance Winchester Little Libraries’ (WLL) mission to advance literacy throughout lower-income areas of Winchester by the use of community space, Librarian Athena Michael approached Executive Director of the Literacy Volunteers of Winchester Area (LVWA) Andy Gail to partner with this nonprofit.
The WLL is a Committee under the LVWA and is working on setting up standing meetings for the year. We encourage those interested in literacy or free libraries to please sign up through LVWA Volunteer form.
